Texas football vs. Big Ten

Texas has fared relatively well against the current teams in the Big Ten. The Longhorns hold an all-time record against the current Big Ten of 27-13-0. Winning records against blue blood programs like the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines are a good example of Texas’ success against the Big Ten throughout the program’s history.

Minnesota (0-1-0)

Both Big Ten schools the Longhorns have faced but never defeated only met Texas once on the gridiron each. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are the first program undefeated against the Longhorns.

Texas and Minnesota squared off in 1936, a down year for the Longhorns. Texas only won two games that season. And the biggest blowout of all its losses that season came against No. 2 Minnesota when the Longhorns fell short of the Gophers 47-19.

What’s ironic is that the only time that Minnesota faced Texas was the last year of a three-peat of national titles in the mid-1930s. Minnesota was one of the most dominant programs in college football in the 1930s and early 1940s, winning a whopping five national championships from 1934-1941.

Northwestern (0-1-0)

This might be the biggest blemish on the list for the Longhorns.

When Texas faced the Northwestern Wildcats during the 1942 season, you would expect the men in Burnt Orange to come away with a sweeping victory. Texas was the better team coming into that road matchup against Northwestern in Week 3 of the 1942 season.

But Texas couldn’t find a way to top the Wildcats in a defensive struggle of a game. Northwestern kicked a late field goal that just made it through the goalposts to get a tight 3-0 win over the Longhorns.

That was the only win for the Wildcats during the 1942 season, as Northwestern finished in last place in the Big Ten standings. Meanwhile, that was one of only two losses for head coach Dana X. Bible’s Longhorns squad, which finished up with a record of 9-2.
