Texas Football: 3 biggest winners from summer workouts for Longhorns
DJ Campbell, IOL
The only non-true freshman on this list among the winners from the summer for the Longhorns is the former No. 1 rated interior offensive line recruit in the nation in the 2022 class, sophomore guard DJ Campbell. It was good to hear that Campbell made a full return for summer workouts after missing the spring game on April 15 due to a wrist injury.
One of the biggest reasons why Campbell should be considered one of the big winners coming out of summer workouts is that he has proven he deserves to be in the conversation for a starting job along the interior offensive line in fall camp. Campbell is being talked about as potentially the best candidate to win the starting right guard job opposite junior Hayden Conner if he can beat out sophomore guard Cole Hutson.
And with the possibility that Hutson pushes senior Jake Majors for starting reps at center in fall camp, Campbell could have a clear path to winning the starting job at right guard. Hutson is already taking snaps at center for Kyle Flood and the Longhorns this summer.
Expectations are high in Year 2 for Campbell, as this is the year he needs to see it all click on the field and take his game to the next level. The good news is that he seems to be on the right track heading into fall camp.
It sounds like the version of Campbell that the coaches and his teammates saw this summer in the weight room and on the practice field was the most motivated he’s looked since he arrived on campus last offseason.
