Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian faced minimal roster attrition during the offseason. Among the dozen or so departures to the NCAA Transfer Portal from Texas, only a couple of them were going to be able to push for a spot on the two-deep during fall camp this year.

This was another successful transfer portal cycle for Sark and the Longhorns staff in terms of adding key pieces to the roster. Texas picked up transfer commitments from impact players on the two-deep, such as the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell, Wake Forest Demon Deacons redshirt junior cornerback Gavin Holmes, and Arkansas Razorbacks senior safety Jalen Catalon, among a couple of others.

Sark and the Longhorns had two straight offseasons where I would say they’ve gained more than they’ve lost to the transfer portal.

Yet, some of the players the Longhorns did lose to the portal in the last two offseasons will face Texas with their new squads this fall. Here’s a look at five former Texas transfers in the last couple of offseasons that will face the Longhorns on the field this season.

Jaylen Garth & Tyler Johnson, OL

New school: Houston

Two former Texas offensive linemen will be on the two-deep depth chart for the Houston Cougars this fall. The first, former high-four-star recruit Tyler Johnson, is entering his second year as a starter for Houston at offensive guard.

After transferring from Texas two offseasons ago, Johnson started most games he played (10 out of 12) for Houston last season. Johnson fared well as the usual starter at right guard for Houston last fall, grading out as the second-best at his position in the American Athletic Conference in pass blocking. He also received Third-Team All-AAC honors from Pro Football Focus in 2022.

The other former Texas transfer for Houston along the offensive line is sophomore offensive tackle, Jaylen Garth. The 6-foot-5 and 305-pound former high-three-star recruit for the Longhorns was a late summer transfer pickup for head coach Dana Holgorsen and the Cougars last offseason.

Garth didn’t get any snaps in live-game action for Houston last season, but he is projected to be on the two-deep at offensive tackle in 2023.

Texas is set to face Houston on the road at TDECU Stadium on Oct. 21.
