5 former Texas football transfers that the Longhorns will face in 2023
Brenen Thompson, WR
New school: Oklahoma
Arguably the most impactful transfer departure for the Longhorns this offseason saw the speedy freshman wide receiver and former high-four-star recruit out of Spearman, TX, Brenen Thompson. It also hurts that Thompson made the rare move of transferring to one of Texas’ biggest rival schools and a Big 12 foe, the Oklahoma Sooners.
Thompson had a chance to push for a spot on the two-deep this fall at slot or field receiver. But it hurt his chances to get on the two-deep this fall when he missed spring ball this offseason competing with the Texas track and field team.
Thompson took limited reps at Texas last season, getting just two targets at wideout over seven games played. His only catch came on a screen pass last season in Week 8 against Oklahoma State, going for 32 yards.
At OU, Thompson joins a wide receiver room filled with new faces. Oklahoma lost two of its four most productive receivers from last season and its most productive tight end. That includes OU’s best wide receiver, Marvin Mims, who left for the NFL Draft this year.
Amid the bevy of attrition in OU’s wide receiver room this offseason, Thompson will have a big opportunity to get a spot in OU’s wideout rotation this fall. He will compete with two other new additions to the program, including junior Andrel Anthony and freshman Jaquiaze Pettaway, for starting reps at x-wide receiver in fall camp.
Texas will face Thompson and the Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game this fall at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Oct. 7.
