Texas Football: 3 transfers set to be stars for Longhorns in 2023
AD Mitchell, WR
Texas landed one of the best wide receiver transfers in the portal this offseason in former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wideout AD Mitchell. The College Football Playoff standout for the reigning back-to-back National Champion Georgia chose to take his talents to Texas as the next talented starting boundary receiver on the 40.
The 6-foot-4 and 196-pound Mitchell will give redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers the most potent weapon he’s had on the boundary during his time at Texas since last year. Granted, redshirt sophomore boundary receiver Isaiah Neyor would’ve been great for the Longhorns on the outside last fall had he not suffered an unfortunate season-ending knee injury in a fall camp scrimmage.
Mitchell proved during spring ball that he is everything as advertised and more. He had that amazing highlight-reel one-handed catch in the end zone from Ewers in the spring game, along with a couple of other nice receptions on April 15.
We’ve continued to hear great things about Mitchell’s talent and potential in this offense in 7v7 and summer workouts the last couple of months. He can be a 1,000-yard receiver in this offense if he gets the right number of targets. But there are a lot of great receivers that Ewers can spread the ball around to this fall.
Mitchell is an early-round NFL Draft talent that gives Ewers and the Longhorns another potent weapon in the receiving corps alongside standout junior Xavier Worthy and the experienced and proven redshirt senior slot receiver Jordan Whittington. Add Neyor and true freshman Johntay Cook II to this receiving corps, and you get one of the country’s deepest and most talented WR rooms this year.
