In the midst of a busy time of year on the recruiting trail, Texas football is building the 2024 class before fall camp begins. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian have recruited well the past few cycles, and it’s looking like the 2024 class will be another success on the trail.

Sark and the Longhorns staff have raked in two straight recruiting classes that ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the 247Sports Composite. And while the Longhorns will need at least a handful of its top blue-chip recruits committed to the 2024 class to get in the top 10 again for this cycle.

Recruiting rankings aren’t everything, though, especially with how Texas must build its roster ahead of the move from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2024. Evaluating the talented prospects that fit the scheme and the culture within the program is what matters most for Sark and his staff on the recruiting trail.

Most underrated recruits in Texas football history

In the last couple of decades, we’ve seen that Texas can get a ton of value, even out of low three-star recruits, as long as they’re the right fit on the Forty Acres. Here’s a look at five of the most underrated recruits in Longhorns football history.

Samuel Cosmi, OT

Recruiting ranking: No. 1,109 in 2017 class (247Sports Composite)

One of the last decade’s best offensive tackles for the Longhorns is the former low three-star recruit out of Humble (TX) Atascocita High School, Samuel Cosmi. The sizable and skilled 6-foot-7 and 310-pound offensive tackle was a two-time All-Big 12 selection, two-time All-American, and a USA Today Freshman All-American during his time at Texas.

Out of the handful of offensive linemen that received All-American honors since 2010 for the Longhorns, Cosmi is the lowest-rated recruit of them all. Cosmi ranked outside of the top 100 offensive tackles in the nation in the 2017 class and just outside of the top 1,100 prospects in the nation.

It was a tremendous move for Derek Warehime, former head coach Tom Herman, and the Longhorns to flip Cosmi’s commitment from the Houston Cougars. He was the best out of the 2017 recruiting class for the Longhorns, along with four-star Austin Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
