Texas basketball and new head coach Rodney Terry have a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail this summer. Texas landed three commitments in the last six weeks or so in the 2023 class, two from the high school ranks and one from the NCAA Transfer Portal (senior SG Ithiel Horton). The two from the high school ranks were three-star Houston (TX) PSAT-XEA Academy small forward Devon Pryor and four-star Montverde Academy combo guard Chris Johnson.

Terry and the Longhorns will look to convert that momentum on the recruiting trail in the 2023 class this summer to launch the 2024 class heading into the fall. One of the key targets in the 2024 class that the Longhorns are progressing with this summer is the high-four-star Pasadena Memorial (TX) power forward Robert Miller III.

Miller included the Longhorns among his six finalist schools that he dropped on social media on July 17. On3’s Joe Tipton published the six finalist schools for Miller early this week, which included the Colorado Buffaloes, Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Texas.

Texas is one of the top schools for Miller after he took multiple unofficial visits to Austin since last summer. It was also reported in the piece from On3’s Tipton announcing Miller’s top six schools this week that he wants to return to Texas soon for an official visit.

Texas is one of a handful of schools that the 6-foot-10 and 225-pound big man Miller has visited. He also took official visits to LSU (April 14, 2023) and Colorado (June 2, 2023) within the last few months.

Terry and Brandon Chappell have built a good relationship with Miller

Miller recently told Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports that he’s got good relationships with Terry and assistant Brandon Chappell. He also likes Terry’s vision for the Longhorns’ future as the new full-time head coach.

"“Rodney Terry is a great guy. I can see that he wants the program to stay at the level that they were this year. I talk to Brandon Chappell. They have been trying to settle their roster but they want to get me on an official visit.”"

Terry and the Longhorns have recruited Miller for a long time now. Texas was one of the first schools that offered Miller, which came in the spring of 2022. Texas was also the first major conference school that Miller visited.

Miller is one of Texas’ top priority forwards in the 2024 class

As one of a handful of top forwards that Terry and the Longhorns staff are targeting in the 2024 class this summer, he’s someone to watch in the next few months. Texas is also prioritizing other top forward recruits in the 2024 class this offseason, such as five-star Dallas (TX) Link Academy small forward Tre Johnson, four-star Carrollton (TX) Newman Smith power forward Nic Codie, and four-star Montverde Academy small forward Liam McNeeley.

McNeeley officially visited Texas on April 24, 2023, and Codie is set to take his official visit to Austin on Sep. 29.
