The most impactful miss for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail this summer in the 2024 class is easily Gipson, who committed to Clemson over Texas and Ohio State on July 22.

Gipson was one of the Longhorns’ top in-state defensive back priorities in the 2024 class this summer. And it looked like Texas had momentum in this recruitment coming out of Gipson’s late-June official visit to Austin.

Yet, just because Texas missed on Gipson this weekend doesn’t mean this staff will stop recruiting him. In past cycles, we’ve seen Texas recruit through the finish line with other top-priority recruits to eventually get successful results on signing day.

While it’s obviously no certainty, if Texas could flip Gipson’s commitment from the Tigers on signing day, it wouldn’t be the first time this staff pulled off such a feat with a top in-state defensive back recruit. Texas flipped former four-star Little Elm (TX) cornerback Terrance Brooks from Ohio State during the Early Signing Period in the 2022 class.

Texas will continue to recruit Gipson as it has prior to him committing to Clemson this weekend. There is also the possibility that Texas will get its other top defensive back priorities in the 2024 class, such as Connally’s Black and John Ehret’s Mack, before turning to the transfer portal for help filling out the rest of the secondary spots.
