Adding floor spacers was a primary task for new full-time head coach Rodney Terry and the Texas basketball coaching staff in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason. Texas has more floor spacing on the projected roster heading into the 2023-24 season than we’ve seen from the men’s hoops program in over a decade.

This amount of floor spacing on the projected roster for next season addresses an issue the Longhorns faced on the hardwood in the last few campaigns. Texas wasn’t one of the best shooting teams in the Big 12 in a long time.

And while Texas showed signs of life last season regarding the ability to space the floor, especially in the backcourt and wing rotations, that squad was still mediocre in the grand scheme of things. Here are the numbers and conference/national rankings for Texas shooting from deep in the last decade.

  • 2022-23: 34.7 3P% (No. 5 Big 12, No. 156 D1)
  • 2021-22: 33.0 3P% (No. 5 Big 12, No. 232 D1)
  • 2020-21: 35.6 3P% (No. 3 Big 12, No. 89 D1)
  • 2019-20: 33.4 3P% (No. 5 Big 12, No. 173 D1)
  • 2018-19: 34.8 3P% (No. 5 Big 12, No. 154 D1)
  • 2017-18: 32.0 3P% (No. 10 Big 12, No. 321 D1)
  • 2016-17: 29.2 3P% (No. 10 Big 12, No. 345 D1)
  • 2015-16: 34.1 3P% (No. 6 Big 12, No. 206 D1)
  • 2014-15: 33.9 3P% (No. 6 Big 12, No. 196 D1)
  • 2013-14: 32.7 3P% (No. 8 Big 12, No. 261 D1)

The only season where the Longhorns were firmly among the top half of Division I schools in college hoops in three-point shooting percentage was during the 2020-21 campaign.

There is a similar trend line for the Longhorns in mid-range shooting in the last decade. Texas did show more signs of life last season in mid-range shooting efficiency, but the Longhorns were in the bottom half of the Big 12 more often than not in the last 10 years in this metric.

There is a great chance the Longhorns have to be one of the best shooting teams not just in the Big 12 but in the entire country this season, thanks to the new portal additions made this offseason by Terry and this staff. Here’s a look at the three best shooters on the projected roster for the Longhorns heading into the 2023-24 season.
