Texas football just wrapped up the first day of fall practice on the afternoon of Aug. 2. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian hit the Frank Denius Field for the first day of actual training camp reps exactly one month ahead of the 2023 regular season opener on Sep. 2 at home at DKR against the Rice Owls.

After a long offseason, Sark and the Longhorns got back to practice ahead of a season with high expectations in the final year in the Big 12. Texas was picked atop the preseason Big 12 media poll. Essentially all the major Vegas sportsbooks also peg Texas as the clear favorite to win the Big 12 this fall.

Texas went through non-contact practice in helmets, shoulder pads, and shorts on the first day of fall practice on Aug. 2. This will be the first of a few straight days of non-contact practice before the team gets the full pads on.

It’s also worth noting that the team practice in mid-100s heat on the first day of fall practice. And unless the coaches move some of these practices indoors to the humidor, the days will be hot throughout the week.

Day 1 fall practice standouts for Texas football

Here’s a look at four standouts for the Longhorns from the first day of fall practice.

Warren Roberson, DB

One of the most underrated summer enrollees for the Longhorns was the former TCU Horned Frogs commit, and blue-chip safety recruit out of Red Oak High School, true freshman defensive back Warren Roberson. We’ve heard positive things about the direction of Roberson’s game since the early stages of summer workouts.

Roberson stood out physically throughout summer workouts. The 6-foot and 180-pound first-year defensive back definitely looked the part physically on the first day of summer workouts too. It was also impressive to see Sark specifically mention Roberson among the players that have caught his attention heading into the fall.

Inside Texas reported on Aug. 2 (paid content) that Roberson “looked tremendous physically” during the first day of fall practice.

It was also noted that Roberson cross-trained at the star and safety positions with the third-team defense on the first day of fall practice.
