Texas Football: 4 standouts from first day of Longhorns fall practice
Byron Murphy II, DL
The best-looking defensive lineman throughout much of the offseason is junior Byron Murphy II. The third-year nose tackle has taken his game and his physical tools to another level winter workouts.
Since spring ball, Murphy has also looked good in individual and team defensive drills. He continued that trend of looking great in individual drills during the first day of fall practice on Aug. 2. Jeff Howe of Horns247 reported on Aug. 2 (paid content) that Murphy looked much quicker with his get-off compared to the other defensive lineman on the first day of fall practice.
Howe said that Murphy is “elite” in the area of get-off quickness at the line of scrimmage.
That sentiment of Murphy looking great on the first day of fall practice was echoed in other practice reports on Aug. 2. He was one of the first players Bobby Burton and Gerry Hamilton mentioned in their post-practice report on their YouTube show.
We figured Murphy would be the most impressive defensive lineman from the get-go during fall camp. And that appears to be the case after the first day of camp. He should only get more impressive from here on out once Texas puts the pads on for contact practices and scrimmages in the next couple of weeks.
