Texas Football: 3 biggest takeaways from Day 2 of fall practice
A few hours ago, Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian wrapped up the second day of fall practice. Texas has practiced in the searing Austin heat (temperatures in the mid-100s Fahrenheit) the last two days to begin training camp.
Texas’ players have looked like the real deal at almost every position group in practice the last two days. This team is clearly showing that they got down to work right away during summer workouts and that it will be a force to be reckoned with on the field this season.
We got even more positive feedback, notes, and nuggets coming out of the second day of fall practice on Aug. 3. As we work closer to the first day of full-pads practice for the Longhorns, the team will continue to ramp up and get more involved in team drills in training camp.

DJ Campbell is making a legitimate push for the starting job at right guard
One of the biggest position battles on the offensive side of the ball for the Longhorns in fall camp is along the interior offensive line. Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns are working to figure out the starting center and right guard heading into Week 1 at home against the Rice Owls.
A big-time candidate (literally) to win the starting job at right guard is the former top-ranked interior offensive line recruit in the nation in the 2022 class, sophomore DJ Campbell. The 6-foot-3 and 345-pound second-year interior offensive lineman has impressed the coaching staff and the media since the latter stages of summer workouts.
Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas/On Texas Football said in a post-practice report on YouTube on Aug. 30 that Campbell has a ton of power during combo and team drills in practice this week.
"“Boy DJ Campbell now, they’re starting to work to the second level and do some combo stuff. He’s got a h*ll of a lot of power on contact. He’s 343 pounds and got a little mass back there. When he strikes, his strike has meaning.”"
That’s a pretty vivid and empowering account from Hamilton of what Campbell looked like in drills on the second day of fall practice.
If Campbell keeps making big impressions like this in fall practice, and sophomore Cole Hutson can win the starting job over senior Jake Majors at center, the job will be his for the taking at right guard heading into Week 1.
