Competition: Malik Muhammad, Terrance Brooks

Field cornerback is the position battle that features the most talented candidates for the starting job in fall camp for the Longhorns. It will be either true freshman Malik Muhammad, sophomore Terrance Brooks, or the former Wake Forest Demon Deacons redshirt junior transfer Gavin Holmes that wins the starting job at field corner heading into Week 1.

Brooks took most of the first-team reps at field corner in practice in the last couple of days. But we’ve also heard good things about how all three candidates looked for the starting job at field corner in practice this week.

There is an asterisk next to Holmes’ name on this list because he didn’t come into fall camp taking the first-team reps at field corner. As we mentioned before, most of the first-team reps in individual and team drills at field corner in the first two days of camp went to Brooks.

Although, there was a point during spring ball when Holmes was getting the first-team reps at field corner in team drills. He showed out during the spring, consistently holding his own in one-on-one matchups with some of the quickest Texas wideouts in pass coverage.

Holmes’ speed and ability to cover the deep ball in man coverage will be his biggest advantages over the rest of the competition for the starting job at field corner. But it sounds like Brooks has the edge right now over Holmes and Muhammad in the early stages of fall camp.

Even if Brooks wins the starting job at field corner Week 1, Muhammad and Holmes will be too good for Pete Kwiatkowski, Terry Joseph, and the Longhorns to keep off the field consistently in live-game action this fall.
