Fall camp is in full swing for the Texas football program in early August. Meanwhile, Texas is still seeing a lot of movement on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class late this summer. And there isn’t a bigger true defensive line target for Texas in the 2024 recruiting class late this summer than the elite five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley.

It looks like Texas is in a good spot among the top schools in this recruitment heading into the fall. Texas was one of the frontrunners in this recruitment in the last few months since McKinley had a successful late-June official visit to Austin.

Texas’ confidence with McKinley was high following the late-June official visit to Austin. It looked as if Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners were the schools setting the pace with McKinley following the June official visits.

But the LSU Tigers made a big move with McKinley and his family during his unofficial trip to Baton Rouge last week for the Bayou Splash. McKinley and his family had a good experience at the Bayou Splash last weekend. It sounded like this was one of McKinley’s best visits to Baton Rouge of the three he’s taken this year.

Texas seemingly still has confidence in this recruitment, despite the move that LSU made coming out of the Bayou Splash with McKinley last weekend. On Aug. 4, Hank South of Horns247 entered a 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction projecting McKinley’s commitment to Texas (with six out of 10 confidence).

The crystal ball from South also saw the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine give Texas the edge over LSU in the race to land a commitment from McKinley heading into the fall.

Multiple other reports have echoed that Texas and OU lead this recruitment

A recent report from Inside Texas affirms the confidence that Texas is one of the pacesetters in this recruitment. Inside Texas’ Justin Wells reported on Aug. 4 that there is a “feeling around the Acadiana program that it’s more likely McKinley picks Texas or Oklahoma before he would pick LSU.”

Last week, we mentioned on the site that Texas and Oklahoma are in the “pole position” in this recruitment as McKinley gets closer to a decision.

There is a chance that McKinley could be getting closer to a decision date. If he does announce his commitment before his senior season at Acadiana High School, McKinley would decide on or before their season opener on Sep. 1.
