One of the most impressive true freshmen in the first few days of fall practice, hands down, is the former elite five-star recruit out of DeSoto High School in South DFW, wide receiver Johntay Cook II. We heard a lot of positive feedback regarding Cook’s performance in practice and his physical transformation during the spring and summer workouts.

Cook worked his way up to the second-team reps at field receiver on Aug. 4. This comes after he got the third-team reps at field receiver behind junior Xavier Worthy and redshirt junior Isaiah Neyor on Aug. 3.

It sounds like this depth chart movement on the third day of fall practice was intentional, as Cook has earned his spot on the two-deep so far in camp. We wrote post-practice on Aug. 3 that Cook looked like he belonged with the top group of five or five wideouts in the early stages of camp.

He’s one of the quickest wideouts in and out of his cuts. Cook is also running very clean routes at different levels of the field. On multiple occasions, Cook has burned opposing defensive backs in one-on-one drills.

Cook’s exceptional start to fall camp is both a testament to his talent and readiness to make an immediate impact this season and the overall depth and talent that Sark has built at wideout in his third year at the helm. Texas’ wide receiver room looks as good, or better than advertised in the early stages of camp.
