Johntay Cook II, WR

The true freshman for the Longhorns that takes the cake as the most impressive in the first week of fall camp is the former elite five-star recruit out of DeSoto High School, wide receiver Johntay Cook II. Cook essentially caught everyone’s attention between his teammates, the media, and the coaches in practice this week.

Most practice reports the last few days gushed about Cook’s polished skill set, standout physical tools, and route-running ability. Between him burning opposing defensive backs in one-on-one drills and running some of the smoothest routes of any of the wideouts this week, Cook has started to solidify his spot on the two-deep.

If there was any doubt that Cook wouldn’t be in that top group of four or five wideouts for Sark and the Longhorns this fall, that was put to bed in the first week of fall practice.

One practice report this week even mentioned that it will be difficult to see Cook being less than one of the top four wideouts in the pecking order for targets in the passing game this season.

"“Every player on the roster recognizes him as the next big thing on the roster.”"

Here is another quote from a practice report this week about Cook that stuck out.

This week, multiple media players mentioned Cook among the breakout players to watch on offense for the Longhorns this fall, including junior defensive lineman Byron Murphy II and redshirt senior offensive tackle Christian Jones.

If Cook keeps performing at this level throughout the rest of fall camp, he’ll make a strong case to be one of the top five players getting the most targets in the passing game this season.
