As of Aug. 6, Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian held four fall practices. Texas had the helmets and shorts on for the first two days of fall practice earlier this week. And in the last two days, Texas put on the shells and shoulder pads for the first two full days of drills in training camp.

We have a good idea through the first four fall practices of which Longhorn players stand out physically. But we’ll have to wait until the team puts on the full pads to really see who’s ready to break out in fall camp.

The former Georgia Bulldogs junior transfer wide receiver AD Mitchell is one player that has looked the part physically and in individual and team drills early in training camp. The projected starting boundary receiver looks the part of an all-conference and future early-round NFL Draft pick-caliber wideout heading into the season.

Texas football standout AD Mitchell is a “complete receiver”

Since around the second or third week of spring ball, Mitchell has found his rhythm. And he keeps getting better in the early stages of fall camp.

Inside Texas reported on Aug. 6 (paid content) that Mitchell was among the first players mentioned by a team source among the standouts from the first week of fall practice. Mitchell reportedly showed that “he’s a complete receiver” early in camp.

We all know the pure size, vertical ability, and catch radius that Mitchell brings on the boundary. But this IT report notes how his “situational intelligence” and ability to create space before and after the catch have stuck out this offseason.

Mitchell among the most hyped-up Texas wideouts in 2023

The hype surrounding Mitchell is palpable heading into the season. He’s one of the candidates to lead the team in receiving yards and touchdowns this fall. And given his combination of size, verticality, and after-the-catch ability, Mitchell will be one of the favorite targets of redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Mitchell will be a critical part of one of the deepest and most talented wide receiver rooms in the Power Five this fall. The top five wideouts that Texas has with Mitchell, junior Xavier Worthy, redshirt senior Jordan Whittington, redshirt junior Isaiah Neyor, and true freshman Johntay Cook II is hands down the best top group in the Big 12.

Only the Ohio State Buckeyes have a valid argument that they have a better wide receiver room than the Longhorns. And I’m not so sure that there’s a huge gap between the Texas and Ohio State wide receiver rooms this fall.
