The month of August is usually a time when the action slows down on the recruiting trail for the Texas football program. With the pads coming on for the start of fall camp, recruiting is usually moved to the side in place of preparation of the upcoming season.

That is not the case for the Longhorns late this summer, though. August is a massive month for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class this year.

Not only are there multiple top-priority recruits for the Longhorns in the 2024 class with upcoming decision dates this month, but there are also a handful of other top targets in this cycle with the potential of announcing shortly (i.e., 4-Star CB Wardell Mack and 5-Star OT Brandon Baker). August could be a make-or-break month on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns in the 2024 class.

There is a ton of excitement and anticipation regarding what lies ahead on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns’ 2024 class this month. Here’s a look at three elite recruits the Longhorns could nab in the 2024 class in August.

Colin Simmons, EDGE

The top-priority recruit for the Longhorns in the 2024 class late this summer is, hands down, the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons. The top-ranked edge rusher recruit in the nation in the 2024 class is as coveted of a prospect as the Longhorns have this cycle.

We’re just 48 hours from Simmons’ commitment date. He announces on Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. CT at Duncanville High School, along with his teammate and four-star running back Caden Durham.

The momentum swings are abundant in this recruitment of late. Simmons was trending to Texas following a successful official visit to Austin in late June. Texas gave Simmons and his family the priority treatment during that late-June official visit. They had a great experience on campus that weekend.

But LSU swung the momentum back in its favor with Simmons following a successful unofficial visit to Baton Rouge for the Bayou Splash on July 28.

Texas and LSU both have confidence heading into Simmons’ Aug. 10 decision date. But Texas did get a 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction from national recruiting analyst Mike Roach (with four out of 10 confidence) on Aug. 8. That is encouraging for where Texas stands in this recruitment 48 hours from Simmons’ decision date.

No matter what happens Thursday afternoon, Texas and LSU will have to recruit Simmons through the finish line in December.

Decision date: Aug. 10
