Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian completed their fifth day of fall practice on Aug. 7. Texas has practiced in the evenings more often in the last few days due to the insane Austin heat this month.

The Longhorns also put shells and shoulder pads on for the first time in fall practice last weekend. It won’t be long until Texas participates in the highly anticipated first fall scrimmage of training camp.

Through the first five fall practices, we’ve received plenty of intel regarding the players that have impressed the media, coaches, and their teammates in the last week. Sark even mentioned some players by name among the standouts for the Longhorns after the first five days of fall practice on Aug. 7.

Moreover, while some practice reports surfaced and some intel coming through, Day 5 of fall practice had limited eyeballs from the media since it didn’t have the usual media viewing window.

Standouts from the fifth day of fall practice for Texas football

Here’s a look at three standouts for the Longhorns from the fifth day of fall practice on Aug. 7.

Alfred Collins, DL

In the last two days of fall practice, one player that really stood out was senior defensive lineman Alfred Collins. The former elite five-star recruit seems to be coming into his own heading into his fourth season wearing the Burnt Orange.

On Aug. 5, Collins apparently had the best practice of his career at Texas. Collins was the first player mentioned in a practice report among the standouts from Day 4 of fall practice on Aug. 5.

And it sounds like Collins kept the momentum rolling in practice early this week. Once again, Collins was the first name mentioned among the standouts from fall practice on Aug. 7 when Sark spoke at the podium for his post-practice press conference.

This is a huge development due to how crucial Collins is to the depth of the interior defensive line rotation for DL coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns this fall. Collins needs to be one of the key defensive linemen that step up in the rotation behind junior Byron Murphy II and redshirt senior T’Vondre Sweat.

Collins is getting the second-team reps in individual and team drills along the defensive line in the first five fall camp practices. Given Texas’s depth and talent at the defensive line this fall, Collins battling for one of those top three or four spots in the IDL rotation shows that the coaches have faith in him panning out this fall.

That faith could pay dividends this fall if Collins finally starts living up to the hype during his senior campaign.
