The hottest topic among the true freshmen standing out early in fall camp is the former elite five-star recruit out of DeSoto High School, wide receiver Johntay Cook II. Cook is getting all sorts of praise from all directions the last few days.

Cook was one of a handful of offensive players Sark specifically mentioned on Aug. 7 among the standouts that caught his attention early in fall practice. Sark elaborated on the progression he’s seen from Cook throughout the offseason.

"“I think when you first arrive and you are a ‘five star’ and you are here in spring ball – 1. They have really good coaches at DeSoto. He has been coached in a way that he believes in (himself). Then you go to a new system or scheme just like when our guys leave us, then it is about doing things the way that organization wants it done."

It sounds like Cook has followed a path similar to Freshman All-Americans, offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and Xavier Worthy in terms of how he’s gotten down to work and proven himself as a true freshman. Cook isn’t just expecting to come in and contribute immediately based on talent alone.

"“What I have loved about Johntay right now, is how coachable he is. I think he is really trying to do what we are asking of him to do,” Sarkisian said. “But when you are playing fast and have an idea of knowing what to do and are coachable while not making the same mistakes twice, you give yourself an opportunity to be successful in this system. That’s what is showing up for him.”"

Banks and Worthy earned the reps and praise they received during their respective true freshman campaigns in the last two seasons. The same could be said for Cook if he stays on the path he’s on early in fall practice.
