Texas Football: 3 top recruits impressed by Colin Simmons’ commitment
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian landed their “must-get” recruit in the 2024 class on Aug. 10. The elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons committed to Texas over the LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, and SMU Mustangs when he announced his decision at Duncanville High School.
Simmons’ commitment will have a huge impact on Texas both on the recruiting trail and on the field upon leaving the Big 12 for the SEC in 2024. Simmons will be an immediate impact starter at edge rusher for the Longhorns next fall. And his commitment to Texas will generate a ton of momentum on the recruiting trail for this staff in the 2024 and 2025 classes heading into the fall.
To put this in perspective, Simmons is the highest-rated defensive recruit in the 247Sports Composite to commit to Texas in the last decade and the second-highest-rated overall. Only the former Isidore Newman five-star 2023 quarterback Arch Manning is rated higher than Simmons among Texas commits in the last decade in the 247Sports Composite.
Top recruits impressed by the commitment of 5-Star EDGE Colin Simmons to Texas football
With all of this in mind, here’s a look at three top recruits that Simmons’ commitment to Texas on Aug. 10 caught the attention of.
Wardell Mack, CB
One of the top defensive back priorities for the Longhorns in the 2024 class, high-four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack, is a potential candidate to be the next to commit to Texas after Simmons did on Aug. 10. Texas is in a good spot for Mack after he took a pair of successful visits to Austin since the spring.
Mack visited Texas unofficially for the spring game on April 15. He also made the trip to Austin officially in late June.
Texas is one of the frontrunners in the race to land a commitment from Black heading into the fall. The Longhorns are battling the Florida Gators, with LSU trailing behind in third place, as Mack looks to potentially decide in the next few weeks.
We mentioned on the site earlier today that Mack could announce in the next two or three weeks. Hank South of Horns247 reported on Aug. 10 (paid content) that Mack may target a late August/September decision timeline.
Moreover, it certainly helps the Longhorns’ cause that Simmons jumped in the 2024 class on Aug. 10. Mack noticed a post from a Texas fan Twitter account after Simmons’ commitment on Aug. 10, talking about the dominos that could fall in the coming days and weeks in the 2024 class.
Mack posted that tweet from the Texas fan account on his IG story.
