Texas Football: DL Sydir Mitchell suffers a reported leg injury in practice
The first major injury news of fall camp thus far for Texas football surfaced on Aug. 9. Chip Brown of Horns247 reported on the night of Aug. 9 that true freshman defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell suffered a leg injury that “required him to be helped off the field” during a full-pads practice on the evening of Aug. 8.
Mitchell reportedly “was undergoing an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.” But as of the writing of this article on the night of Aug. 9, we don’t have an update yet regarding the results of Mitchell’s MRI.
This Horns247 report notes that Mitchell’s leg injury occurred while the Longhorns went through full-contact team drills on Aug. 8.

"One source close to the situation said the injury occurred in 11-on-11, full-contact action while the team was working on its red zone offense."
There also wasn’t an update regarding the severity of the injury to Mitchell beyond that he was “helped” off the practice field instead of being carted off.
Mitchell has the makings of a future standout and an immediate contributor at DL for Texas
In the early stages of fall practice, Mitchell was competing for a spot in the defensive line rotation for DL coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns. Mitchell mostly took third-team practice reps in the first week of fall practice alongside the former Minnesota Golden Gophers senior transfer defensive lineman Trill Carter.
Behind the starting duo of junior Byron Murphy II and redshirt senior T’Vondre Sweat, Texas doesn’t have a ton of proven depth along the interior defensive line. Texas will be counting on senior defensive lineman Alfred Collins and junior Vernon Broughton to be key contributions to the IDL rotation behind the starting duo of Murphy and Sweat.
Mitchell was also set to be one of the key contributors at the nose tackle position this fall, behind Murphy in the DL rotation.
