A top priority among out-of-state forwards in the 2024 class for the Longhorns for a long time is the elite five-star Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy small forward Liam McNeeley. The No. 3 small forward recruit in the nation in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite has Texas among his top schools late this summer.

At the moment, though, it looks like the Indiana Hoosiers are in pole position in the race to land a commitment from McNeeley heading into the fall, with Texas in second place. Terry and the Longhorns have made up ground in this recruitment since the spring when the communication dropped off a bit after the departure of former Texas head coach Chris Beard.

Beard was the coach that initially offered McNeeley. His departure and the resulting lag in communication put Texas behind the eight ball with McNeeley early this year.

But Terry and the Longhorns staff have done a nice job of getting back in contention among the top schools for McNeeley. Texas had McNeeley on campus for a successful visit during the spring.

Texas needs to get McNeeley back on campus at least once before the Early Signing Period this fall to close the gap on the leading Hoosiers in this recruitment.

It’s worth noting that Inside Texas/On3 reported this summer that Texas landing Scott could help Indiana with McNeeley. Since Terry and the Longhorns are pitching McNeeley to be a lengthier wing and potentially a switchable four, it would start to get crowded at the three in this class with Scott already committed.
