Texas football took part in its first scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 12. In one of the most highly-anticipated events of training camp; we have some intel regarding the top performers and the two-deep from certain position groups following the conclusion of the first scrimmage of training camp.

The feedback from the first fall scrimmage this weekend is about as positive as you could hope. Horns247 reported after the scrimmage on Aug. 12 (paid content) that there was only one player for the Longhorns in a green jersey, junior wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

It was also mentioned that Worthy’s injury is nothing too serious, as wearing the green jersey was more precautionary.

Worthy dealt with a lingering injury issue throughout this week in fall practice. But it sounds like nothing will keep him off the field heading into the regular season in a few weeks.

Moreover, the first fall scrimmage saw the quarterbacks and skill talent on both sides of the ball steal the show. We heard about many of the younger players making plays on both sides of the ball, which is very encouraging heading into Week 1 on Sep. 2 against the Rice Owls.

Standouts from the first scrimmage of fall camp for Texas football this weekend

Here’s a look at five Longhorns players that shined in the first scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 12.

Malik Muhammad, CB

One of the true freshmen that stood out for the Longhorns in the first fall scrimmage this weekend was cornerback Malik Muhammad. The 6-foot and 181-pound South Dallas native cornerback put on a show in coverage during the scrimmage.

CJ Vogel of TFB Texas reported post-scrimmage (donor content) that Muhammad was one of the true standouts from the scrimmage today. Vogel specifically wrote that the “day belonged to Muhammad”.

Muhammad reportedly came up with an interception on a pass he jumped from redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy. He also forced the offense to cough up another turnover when he forced a fumble later in the scrimmage.

To cap it all off, Muhammad was consistent in coverage throughout the scrimmage.

Muhammad has continued to progress throughout the offseason. He added necessary weight to fill out his frame during summer workouts, and his coverage skills at a raw level are on par with any Texas cornerback on the roster this year.
