Texas Football: 5 players that shined in the first fall scrimmage
Alfred Collins, DL
The last week was a huge stretch for the uber-talented former elite five-star recruit and senior defensive lineman Alfred Collins. Since last weekend’s closed practice on Aug. 5, Collins has received constant praise from the coaching staff and the media.
Sark mentioned Collins among the players that caught his attention in the early stages of training camp during a post-practice press conference on Aug. 7. He was also the first player mentioned among the standouts in a couple of practice reports from Aug. 5 and 7.
It sounds like Collins has continued to show more consistency and effort in individual and team drills and scrimmage settings. Collins reportedly did a nice job of holding his gaps in run defense and getting some pressure on the quarterback as an interior pass rusher.
Collins is thriving with the second-team defensive line in team drills and in the first fall scrimmage this weekend. He and junior defensive lineman Vernon Broughton have received recognition from Sark this week for their performances in practice in the early stages of fall camp.
One post-scrimmage report said that Collins had the “best day” among all the Longhorns defensive players on Aug. 12.
This is huge for the Longhorns to have Collins stepping up consistently in practice. I don’t know if we’ve seen this much hype surrounding Collins’ performances in camp for a week consecutively since he arrived on the 40 four years ago.
Texas needs Collins to keep performing at a consistent level since he will be a critical part of the top three in the defensive line rotation for Bo Davis this fall.
