Texas Football: 5 players that shined in the first fall scrimmage
Quinn Ewers, QB
The strongest performance from the quarterbacks in the first fall scrimmage on Aug. 12 reportedly came from redshirt sophomore Quinn Ewers. Multiple scrimmage reports on Aug. 12 echoed the sentiment that Ewers was the best and most consistent performer among the quarterbacks in today’s scrimmage.
The second-year starting quarterback had a nearly-spotless day in the first fall scrimmage, outside of one interception he threw to senior safety Jerrin Thompson. Ewers tossed a couple of touchdowns on the day to true freshman wide receiver Johntay Cook II and junior wide receiver AD Mitchell. He also reportedly ran for one score himself.
It sounds like Ewers had a lot of pressure coming at him in the pocket from the interior pass rush. But he consistently held up and found his targets in the passing game, outside of the one pick to Thompson.
It’s worth noting that Ewers reportedly “looked the most comfortable” throwing to Mitchell of all the wideouts in the first fall scrimmage this weekend. This lines up since it was reported in camp last offseason that Ewers’ had a natural connection in practice with boundary receiver Isaiah Neyor.
Given his higher release point, Ewers likes throwing to those bigger receiving targets on the boundary.
The other Texas quarterbacks had mixed results on the first fall scrimmage. Murphy had the aforementioned interception that he threw to Lefau. And true freshman quarterback Arch Manning had his ups and downs on the day. Arch reportedly had a long touchdown run as one of the highlights of his first fall scrimmage with the Longhorns.
All in all, this is Ewers’ team in fall camp. He’s more confident taking the reigns for the offense while keeping composed while coming under pressure in the pocket. Ewers is in line to have a big season leading the way for the Texas offense this fall.
