Texas football landed its “must-get” recruit in the 2024 class earlier this week, with the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons committing to UT over the LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, and SMU Mustangs. Now that Texas has landed the No. 1 edge rusher recruit in the nation in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking, it can turn its attention to other top-priority recruits this cycle.

A few top-priority recruits for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in the 2024 class to watch heading into the fall are five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black, five-star Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei offensive tackle Brandon Baker and five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley.

Black is arguably the highest-priority 2024 recruit for the Longhorns after getting Simmons in this class. The No. 1 cornerback recruit in Texas in the 2024 class, Black, is the top priority at defensive back heading into the fall for the Longhorns.

And it sounds like Texas is setting the pace in this recruitment heading into the fall. Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas/On3 reported on Aug. 12 (paid content) that Texas has a “healthy lead” over the Texas A&M Aggies among Black’s top schools late this summer.

Hamilton also reported that the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, and LSU remain in the mix for Black heading into the fall. That lines up given that Texas, LSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Oregon were in Black’s top five that he dropped on social media a few days ago.

Simmons helping Texas recruit Black

On the site on Aug. 11, we mentioned that Black was the recruit “most impacted” by Simmons’ commitment to the Longhorns earlier this week. Simmons said that getting Black in the boat with him in the Longhorns’ 2024 class is his “top priority” on the recruiting trail.

Black has visited Texas multiple times since the spring, most recently for an unofficial trip in late July. He also made an official visit to Austin in late June.
