Texas Football: 3 underclassmen winning position battles after first scrimmage
Terrance Brooks, CB
The first-team field corner throughout much of fall practice in the first two weeks is sophomore Terrance Brooks. The former high-four-star recruit out of the DFW Metroplex has looked the part of the starter at field corner from a physical perspective and his play on the practice field in the last couple of weeks.
Brooks added size during summer workouts, coming into fall camp at 6-foot and 200-pounds. He definitely looks bigger from what we’ve seen early in fall practice too.
Throughout the offseason, Brooks has shown to be a more well-rounded and physical corner than he was as a true freshman last fall. He also reportedly looks more confident early in fall practice than he did at the same time last year.
Nothing has been reported or that we’ve heard in the first couple of weeks of fall practice indicating Brooks isn’t the presumed starter at field corner. It sounds like the former Wake Forest transfer and redshirt junior corner Gavin Holmes is still in a spot to give the Longhorns quality live-game reps at the field spot. But Brooks still looks like the guy at the position a few weeks ahead of the regular season opener on Sep. 2 at home against the Rice Owls.
Another cornerback that deserves a lot of recognition after the first fall scrimmage this weekend is the talented true freshman and former high-four-star recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School, Malik Muhammad. It sounds like Muhammad was one of the biggest standouts for the Longhorns in the first fall scrimmage this weekend, coming up with a pick and a forced fumble.
