The top priority at wide receiver in the 2024 class for Texas football heading into the fall is the elite St. Louis University (MO) five-star Ryan Wingo. The 6-foot-2 and 210-pound wideout Wingo is the No. 2 prospect out of Missouri in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian, new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, and the Longhorns have prioritized this recruitment since Wingo had a successful mid-June official visit to Texas. During his official visit to Texas from June 16-18, Wingo was hosted by none other than true freshman quarterback Arch Manning.

Texas emerged as a real contender among the top schools in the race to land a commitment from Wingo after that mid-June official visit to Austin. Other top schools for Wingo after the summer official visits are the Mizzou Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers.

5-Star Texas football WR priority Ryan Wingo could commit earlier than mid-December

But this recruitment has started to boil down to a battle between Texas and Mizzou. Wingo has been swayed to stay in-state by Mizzou. And the Tigers have real momentum on the recruiting trail this week after landing the No. 1 recruit in the nation in the 2024 class in the On3 Ranking and the No. 3 recruit in the nation in the 247Sports Composite, five-star Lee’s Summit North (MO) defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri.

Wingo initially set a Dec. 20 decision date

Earlier this offseason, Wingo set a decision date for the Early Signing Period on Dec. 20. In the last couple of weeks, though, some doubts crept up regarding the certainty of Wingo holding onto that mid-December decision timeline.

Those doubts came to a head on Aug. 16, with Wingo telling On3 that he is “thinking about committing earlier” than Dec. 20. Wingo mentioned in this On3 report that he is still technically on the Dec. 20 commitment date. But that could change in the near future.

"“I am still not sure what I want to do, but it is something I am talking with my family about. My commitment date is still the same right now, but committing earlier is definitely a possibility. If it happens earlier, I am still not sure how much earlier and that is something I am trying to figure out.”"

Texas, Tennessee, and Mizzou are the three schools standing out to Wingo

Heading into the fall, the three schools at the top for Wingo are Texas, Tennessee, and Mizzou. He’s got good relationships with the Mizzou staff, and the proximity to home is a factor in this recruitment. There is also the factor of the new NIL law that the Missouri state legislation recently passed, allowing high school players to get NIL deals while still in high school after signing financial aid deals (per Fox 2 Now).

Texas and Tennessee are real contenders in this recruitment. Wingo has visited both schools multiple times and loves how he fits in both offenses. Texas and Tennessee have offensive-minded head coaches and five-star freshmen quarterbacks on the roster that should be starting in the next couple of years.

Wingo visited Texas twice since the first Junior Day of the offseason on Jan. 21, including the aforementioned mid-June official visit. He also visited Tennessee twice unofficially, on May 28 and July 27.
