The No. 1 athlete in the state of Texas in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite, five-star Timpson (TX) product Terry Bussey has already visited Texas football multiple times since last offseason. Bussey last visited Texas on an official trip in late June.

Bussey was one of the many elite blue-chip recruits that made the trip to Austin for that big late-June official visit weekend. He also made unofficial trips to Texas on March 30 and for the TCU game last fall (Nov. 12).

Since last fall, Bussey has visited Texas just about as much as any other school. Yet, that hasn’t resulted in Texas finding much traction with Bussey this offseason.

Texas football getting a pre-decision date visit from 5-Star ATH Terry Bussey?

While Bussey included Texas amid his five finalist schools that he announced with his commitment date, set for Sep. 28, the Longhorns have a lot of ground to make up in this recruitment.

The other finalist schools Bussey announced a few days ago are the Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, and Oklahoma Sooners.

But this recruitment is expected to come down to a battle between Texas A&M and LSU, with Alabama making a late push heading into the fall. Bussey is set to officially visit Alabama (Sep. 9) and LSU (Sep. 23) before his Sep. 28 decision date.

Texas A&M holds pole position in this recruitment late this summer. But Alabama and LSU are poised to make things interesting with Bussey during his early-fall official visits to Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge, respectively.

Texas reportedly getting a visit from Bussey before his late-September commitment

There is another reported visit that Bussey intends to take this fall that could shake things up in this recruitment. CJ Vogel of TFB Texas reported on Aug. 17 (donor content) that Bussey is “trying to get back to Austin” before his commitment on Sep. 28.

That could be the unofficial visit Texas needs to make up the necessary ground with Bussey to put pressure on the leading Aggies. Depending on the timing of that visit, it could be one of the last before Bussey’s commitment.

It’s also worth noting that Bussey will be taking his official visit to Tuscaloosa on the weekend that Texas faces Alabama, on Sep. 10 under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium. If Texas pulls off the shocking upset in Tuscaloosa on Sep. 10, that would give Bussey another reason to reconsider the Longhorns in his recruitment.

This recruitment is getting more interesting by the day. The presumed lead that Texas A&M has among Bussey’s top schools heading into the fall could shrink depending on how these visits go next month to Alabama, LSU, and possibly Texas.
