There are still a few weeks before Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian open up the 2023 regular season at home on Sep. 2 against the Rice Owls. Before the season opener, Texas still has some work to do on the recruiting trail to start rounding out the 2024 class ahead of the Early Signing Period in mid-December.

Texas currently sits at 16 commitments in the 2024 class after landing the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons on Aug. 10. Simmons was the “must-get” recruit for the Longhorns in the 2024 class.

Getting him in the boat helps build momentum for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class heading into the fall. Texas can parlay this momentum into success with its top priorities in this class at key positions of need.

It’s also worth noting that there are some highly-anticipated decision dates upcoming for priority recruits for the Longhorns in the 2024 class before the start of Texas’ season on Sep. 2. Here’s a prediction of every commit for the Longhorns in the 2024 class before the season starts in a few weeks.

Joshua Lair, S

One of the top remaining uncommitted defensive backs on the board for the Longhorns in the 2024 class heading into the fall is the hard-hitting three-star Missouri City (TX) Fort Bend Marshall safety, Joshua Lair. There were questions regarding how much Texas would push for a commitment from Lair during the summer.

But Lair is clearly a take for the Longhorns after missing on other top defensive back targets in the 2024 class this summer, such as four-star Lancaster DB Corian Gipson, four-star Temple (TX) Lake Belton cornerback Selman Bridges, and Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack.

Inside Texas reporting on Aug. 16 that Lair talks to Sark “three times a week” proves that he is a priority for this staff heading into the fall.

Gerry Hamilton reported on the “OTF Today” show on YouTube on Aug. 17 that Lair is likely down to the Washington Huskies, Baylor Bears, and Texas. Hamilton mentioned that Lair’s decision will probably come down to Texas and Baylor.

Lair doesn’t have a set decision timeline at the moment. But there is still a chance that he announces before the start of his senior season. His decision timeline likely comes down to whether he decides to take his scheduled official visit to Washington on Oct. 14, when the Huskies face the Oregon Ducks at home.
