Texas Football: 5 players that impressed in the second fall scrimmage
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian participated in the second and final scrimmage of fall camp this weekend. Texas had another early scrimmage, on the morning of Aug. 19, before heading into the final stages of training camp ahead of the 2023 season.
There were plenty of positives from last weekend’s scrimmage, between avoiding major injuries and young players stepping up. The true freshmen stood out in the first fall scrimmage last weekend, namely cornerback Malik Muhammad and linebacker Anthony Hill Jr.
This is a common theme of training camp thus far that the freshmen for the Longhorns are ready to make an early impact on the field this fall.
Moreover, it’s worth noting that the early notes, nuggets, and reports from this weekend’s fall scrimmage don’t mention major injuries. That is the most important news, especially given what happened in the first fall scrimmage in camp last year.
But it’s also important to discuss the players that stood out and what the depth chart looked like on both sides of the ball in this weekend’s scrimmage. Here’s a look at five Longhorns’ players that impressed in the second and final scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 19.
Jaray Bledsoe, EDGE/DL
A name that we’ve heard thrown around a lot lately among the standouts on the defensive side of the ball is redshirt freshman edge rusher/defensive lineman, Jaray Bledsoe. The athletic pass rusher has made a lot of noise through the first three weeks of fall camp, including a nod from Sark in a recent press conference.
CJ Vogel of TFB Texas reported on Aug. 19 (donor content) that Bledsoe was running mostly with the second-team defense in this weekend’s scrimmage. He also got some run with the third-team defense and even the first-team.
Bledsoe was reportedly the first name that Vogel was told that had a big day on defense. It caught my eye that Bledsoe “couldn’t be blocked” in the second fall scrimmage this weekend. It sounds like he made a lot of plays and was very disruptive in the backfield.
