Texas Football: 5 players that impressed in the second fall scrimmage
CJ Baxter Jr., RB
The top running back from the second fall scrimmage this weekend is true freshman CJ Baxter Jr. The No. 1 rated running back recruit in the nation in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking was reportedly explosive and elusive in the ground game in today’s scrimmage.
Baxter was often the first name we saw and heard regarding the standouts on offense in today’s scrimmage. He was the most impressive running back, breaking off a few big runs on the day.
Whenever you hear one running back’s name more often among the standouts than any other skill position player, the trend is clear. It’s starting to click for Baxter a couple of weeks ahead of the regular season opener against Rice on Sep. 2.
It’s worth noting that most of the second-team reps at running back in the second fall scrimmage on Aug. 19 went to Baxter. It also sounds like he’s on the brink of pushing redshirt sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks for the starting job during the season.
Texas has a good top duo between Brooks and Baxter at the running back position. Both these backs will get a heavy helping of touches no matter what. But the fact that Baxter is ahead of schedule in his development at the running back position is huge news for the Longhorns.
