Texas football just concluded the second and final scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 19. Texas fans have to consider these two scrimmages the last couple of weekends a success since there weren’t any major injuries and there were a plethora of younger players that looked good.

For the second straight weekend, we got positive feedback regarding the performance of Texas’ defense. It sounds like the defense won the scrimmage again, making it two-for-two for this side of the ball.

One of the standouts for the defense in the two scrimmages was true freshman linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. Hill has impressed the last two weekends in the scrimmages with his versatility and playmaking ability at linebacker and as a hybridized edge rusher.

He had a couple of would-be sacks in last weekend’s scrimmage. And it sounds like Hill made more plays at linebacker for the defense in the scrimmage on Aug. 19.

CJ Vogel of TFB Texas reported on Aug. 19 (donor content) that Hill had a “strong showing” with the second-team defense in today’s scrimmage. Vogel reported that a team source said “Hill was everywhere” on defense.

One play Hill made that was mentioned in this scrimmage report was a nice pass breakup he had on a ball from redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers that was intended for redshirt senior wide receiver Jordan Whittington. Hill reportedly went all out to make the leaping pass deflection while covering the flats.

But this wasn’t the only play that had Hill catching people’s attention in and around the program in today’s scrimmage. It sounds like Hill was making plays around the line of scrimmage while holding his own in pass coverage.

This scrimmage report also noted Hill “just seemingly pops up out of nowhere to make plays”. I think this speaks to the versatility that Hill is starting to show in team drills and scrimmage settings at linebacker a few weeks into training camp.

Hill has proved that he’s too good for Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns to keep off the field this fall. He’s one of many true freshmen standing out as immediate contributors in training camp, along with cornerback Malik Muhammad, running back CJ Baxter Jr., and wide receiver Johntay Cook II.
