The first three weeks of fall practice for Texas football saw plenty of true freshmen step up to the plate in a big way. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian saw the likes of true freshman running back CJ Baxter Jr., wide receiver Johntay Cook II, linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., and cornerback Malik Muhammad turn heads in the first half of training camp and the two scrimmages.

On defense, Hill and Muhammad are making waves heading into the fall. These two true freshmen are going to make an immediate impact this season. Hill will be utilized as a hybridized edge rusher and potentially expand into a bigger role at will linebacker.

Meanwhile, Muhammad will get live-game reps in the corner rotation behind starting boundary corner Ryan Watts and starting field corner Terrance Brooks.

Hill, in particular, is on pace to be one of the most exciting playmakers for Texas on defense this fall. He’s proven in fall practice that he’s among the most gifted and electric pass rushers along the defensive front.

The buzz Hill is drumming up in fall practice got recognition this week from 247Sports national recruiting analyst and former Horns247 insider Mike Roach. Hill was mentioned among the “true freshmen from Texas are generating fall camp buzz” in a piece from Roach on Aug. 21.

It caught my eye that Roach said, “sources we speak with feel that the sky is the limit for him once he figures out the finer details of the position and overall defensive scheme”, regarding Hill’s showing in fall practice. While this doesn’t come as a shock to anyone who knows Hill’s ability along the defensive front, it’s more proof of how much excitement is building around his game within the program and in the national media.

Hill is getting second-team reps as a hybrid edge rusher and rotating the second and third-team reps at will linebacker in training camp. He’s bound not only to impact Texas’ pass rush this fall but also push for more live-game reps at will linebacker as the season progresses.
