Texas Football: 4 top Longhorns commits to watch this weekend
This week marks the first full slate of high school games in Texas, many of which feature commitments in the 2024 Texas football recruiting class. A handful of Texas commits in the 2024 class participated in live-game action and scrimmages around the country last week, such as IMG Academy.
High-four-star IMG Academy running back Jerrick Gibson and four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell began their season for the Ascenders last week in a convincing 35-10 win over No. 19 Lipscomb Academy (Nashville, TN).
But most Longhorns commits and targets begin their seasons this week/weekend. Most of the action for key Texas commits and targets on the recruiting trail begins on Aug. 25, but there are some games of note on Aug. 24.

Texas fans can also watch as the college football season gets underway this weekend with Week 0 action, featuring teams such as the USC Trojans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With football back late this week, here’s a look at four key Longhorns commits to watch this weekend.
KJ Lacey, QB
Saraland (AL) vs. Lipscomb Academy (TN)
After IMG Academy downed them last week, Saraland (AL) High School and 2025 Texas four-star quarterback commit KJ Lacey will get a crack at Lipscomb Academy on Aug. 25. This will be an important matchup to watch between Texas’ lone commit in the 2025 class and a preseason top-25 ranked team in the nation in Lipscomb Academy.
Lacey and Saraland will have a chance to show what they can do in front of a national television audience for this game against Lipscomb Academy, which will be broadcast live on ESPN on Aug. 25, with the kickoff time set for 7 p.m. CT.
Texas fans can see the connection between Lacey and the No. 1 ranked wide receiver recruit in the nation in the 2025 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking, Saraland five-star Ryan Williams.
