Texas Football: Xavier Worthy looking ‘unguardable’ in fall practice
Last weekend was the final time that Texas football scrimmaged in fall camp before the start of the 2023 regular season. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian participated in the second scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 19, getting them one step closer to the start of the campaign.
One player that stood out late in training camp, including last weekend’s fall scrimmage, is junior wide receiver Xavier Worthy. We heard positive feedback regarding Worthy’s performances in team drills and the last two fall scrimmages.
Worthy caught multiple touchdown passes in the two scrimmages the last couple of weekends. He also burned some opposing DBs on short and intermediate routes in team drills and scrimmages, along with getting over the top to connect with redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers on the deep ball.
Texas football WR Xavier Worthy is reportedly “unguardable” in fall practice
CJ Vogel of TFB Texas reported on Aug. 24 (donor content) that Worthy has “gotten the best of every cornerback” that he’s faced in fall practice. He also reported the same to regarding his performance in 7v7 work in summer workouts.
It really caught my attention in Vogel’s report when he said that Worthy “has been near unguardable in team situations as of late”. Vogel mentioned Worthy had a great scrimmage last weekend where he made “multiple big plays” in the passing game.
Worthy looks to be turning the page after regressing statistically year-over-year last season. It’s commonly said that this is a “contract year” for Worthy this season. So far in fall camp, he’s performing like his NFL Draft stock is on the line.
It also sounds like Worthy has found greater chemistry with the quarterback in camp this year, especially with Ewers. We’ve mentioned on the site multiple times since the start of training camp that Ewers and Worthy have a more natural connection on the deep ball in team drills and scrimmages.
Worthy can have an All-American-caliber season this fall
If Worthy finds the rhythm he had at wideout as a true freshman in 2021, he’ll emerge as one of the best players at his position in the nation this fall. A big season from Worthy could also put him in contention as a Dark Horse Heisman pick.
It helps Worthy that so many dangerous weapons are around him in the receiving and running back rooms this fall. Texas has one of the most loaded receiving corps in the nation this year, with guys like Worthy, junior AD Mitchell, redshirt senior Jordan Whittington, and redshirt junior Isaiah Neyor.
All the weapons that Texas has at the skill positions this year will give Worthy more room to make things happen in space compared to when he was constantly shaded and double-covered last season.
