One of the biggest issues Texas football faced last season was the lack of connection on the deep ball between quarterback Quinn Ewers and wide receiver Xavier Worthy. The deep ball issues with Ewers and Worthy have been well-documented since last season.

Yet, it looks like Ewers has turned a corner with the deep ball connection with his wideouts in camp this offseason, including with Worthy. We’ve mentioned on the site throughout the offseason that Ewers has natural chemistry in the passing game with junior wide receiver AD Mitchell, especially with the deep ball.

During training camp, it’s also been reported that the deep ball connection between Ewers and Worthy has looked much better than last season. Connecting more on the deep ball is a big part of Ewers’ maturation process as he looks to take firm command of the offense this season.

Inside Texas reported on Aug. 25 (paid content) that Ewers has “been connecting deep” and is in a “much better rhythm with his receivers than last year”.

Ewers reportedly had his best week of practice since the start of fall camp this week. He seems to be on an upward trend heading into the season, which is exactly what you would hope for as a Texas fan ahead of Week 1 against the Rice Owls on Sep. 2.

Ewers generating buzz heading into the season

There is much more confidence and excitement surrounding Ewers’ ability to lead this offense this fall than last year. Ewers has matured and become a more confident leader of the offense this season, which is evident from multiple practice reports and interviews with his teammates since the start of summer workouts.

All-Big 12 junior tight end JT Sanders talked about Ewers’ maturation this offseason since he cut off the mullet early in the spring semester in a press conference on Aug. 6.

"“The way he carries himself, he’s even starting to be more of a leader now on this team; maybe even one of the biggest leaders on this team really. The way he’s playing the game now, how he’s moving with the football, without the football — overall, he’s just a better man.”"

Everything we’ve heard since the start of summer workouts points to Ewers having a big season for the Longhorns in his second year as the starting quarterback. He has the chance to not only be the best quarterback in the Big 12 this season, but also one of the best in the Power Five.
