The biggest commitment date to watch in the next couple of weeks for Texas football among priority recruits in the 2024 class comes on Sep. 1. Texas is one of the top schools in contention for the elite five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley, who is set to announce his commitment on Sep. 1.

McKinley has a top five of the Texas A&M Aggies, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, and Texas heading into his Sep. 1 commitment date. And it sounds like Texas has remained at the forefront of this recruitment less than a week before his announcement.

Defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns have good relationships with McKinley and his family. McKinley’s mom also likes the combination of academic prowess at the University of Texas and the drivability from home in Lafayette, LA.

On3 national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman reported on the YouTube show “On Texas Football” with Gerry Hamilton and Justin Wells of Inside Texas on Aug. 26 that Texas has a good chance with McKinley heading into his Sep. 1 decision date.

"“If we’re trying to figure out which school checks the boxes, you have to feel pretty good about Texas’ chances in the big picture from what we do know.”"

Texas had a lot of momentum in this recruitment since McKinley had a successful late-June official visit to Austin. McKinley and his family enjoyed the official visit experience in Austin from June 23-25. They also had a good visit during McKinley’s first trip to Austin this offseason for Junior Day on Jan. 21.

McKinley is the top remaining priority for Texas at DL in the 2024 class this fall

Heading into the fall, McKinley is the clear-cut top priority at defensive line for Davis and the Longhorns in the 2024 class. McKinley could be a starter in Year 1 or Year 2 at Texas, given his length, disruptiveness, and above-average skill set in run defense and the pass rush.

Texas currently has commitments from three defensive linemen in the 2024 class, including Orlando (FL) Jones four-star D’antre Robinson, Lafayette Christian Academy (LA) three-star Melvin Hills, and Duncanville four-star Alex January.
