The Texas Longhorns might finally be back. Quinn Ewers is back and he’s a big reason why. The Longhorns under Steve Sarkisian come into the year as the No. 11 team in the country and before they get into their matchup with Alabama in Week 2, they have a cupcake in Week 1.

Ewers will lead the Longhorns against the Rice Owls in Austin and BetSided’s lead college football writer Reed Wallach thinks there will be plenty of points scored in this Week 1 matchup. Wallach loves the over in this matchup and I’ll tell you why after getting into the odds.

Betting expert prediction for Texas in Week 1

There are plenty of reasons why Reed Wallach, Betsided’s CFB Betting Expert loves the over in this matchup. It’s not even just about Quinn Ewers being back, but the talent around him in Austin, and a familiar face on the other side.

  • Quinn Ewers is back in Austin after a promising year in Austin and won the job despite Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning applying pressure in the offseason.
  • Texas added to their already talented receiver group. Xavier Worthy is back and is a future NFL receiver, but they have also added AD Mitchell from Georgia in the transfer portal.
  • JT Daniels will bring some stability to Rice’s offense after a boom-or-bust 2022 season on offense. You may know Daniels from his time at Georgia… and USC… and West Virginia.
  • Rice is returning two receivers and three offensive lineman from last year’s team that was top 50 in explosive pass rate.

Wallach prefers the over in this one, because there is a chance that Sark takes his foot off the gas to stay fresh for Alabama next week, but if Rice is scoring a backdoor TD or two to cover the 35 point spread, that only helps the over.
