Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry hosted one of the biggest priority recruits in the 2024 class a couple of weekends ago for a second official visit. The elite five-star Dallas (TX) Link Academy shooting guard Tre Johnson made a multi-day official visit from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29.

The word coming out of the official visit to Texas last week appeared to be positive. But it was unclear whether Texas made a move to become the leader in the race to land a commitment from Johnson coming out of the last day of the official visit on Aug. 29.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas/On3 provided a brief update on Texas’ status in this recruitment during “OTF Today” on YouTube on Sep. 5. Hamilton reported that Texas knocked “it out of the park” during Johnson’s official visit to Austin last week.

It sounds like Texas made a sizable move during Johnson’s multi-day official visit to Austin that started a couple of weekends ago.

A follow-up report from Hamilton on Inside Texas mentioned that Texas is “considered the team to beat” before he takes visits to see the Baylor Bears and Alabama Crimson Tide in the next month. Hamilton reported that Terry and the Longhorns did a nice job laying out the plan for Johnson on the Forty Acres and with the team heading into the future.

Johnson scheduled for fall official visits to Baylor and Alabama

Johnson’s next official visit is to Alabama, starting on Sep. 15. He’s also set to visit Baylor in late September.

Texas, Alabama, and Baylor made Johnson’s top six finalist schools, which he announced on social media during the spring. The other three finalist schools that rounded out his top six are the Arkansas Razorbacks, Kentucky Wildcats, and Kansas Jayhawks.

Johnson is one of Texas’ top priority recruits in the 2024 class after landing a commit from the elite Lexington (SC) shooting guard Cam Scott on Aug. 11. He doesn’t have a public decision timeline set, but it sounds like he’s likely to have a decision ready heading into the Early Signing Period in a couple of months.
