Texas Football: 5 overreactions from Longhorns colossal win over Bama
Texas has found its big game wide receivers
Speaking of pleasant surprises, Ewers connecting on the deep ball with junior wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy was one of the most exciting parts of this game. Ewers connected on three of his six deep passing attempts for 115 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers.
One of the three deep balls went to Worthy for the 44-yard touchdown that was such a critical play in the first half. It was great to see Worthy redeem himself in the first half with that long touchdown catch after a bad drop in the end zone early in the first quarter.
In a way, this deep ball from Ewers to Worthy felt like shades of the nice pass they connected on in the first quarter against Alabama at DKR last season.
Mitchell also continued to prove he is a big game player against the best competition. He hauled in three catches for 78 receiving yards and two touchdowns against Alabama. Every one of Mitchell’s catches in this game was either a deep ball connection between him and Ewers or a touchdown catch.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the performance of standout junior tight end JT Sanders. The All-Big 12 and future NFL Draft pick tight end for the Longhorns burned the Tide defense in the flats. Sark got Sanders out in space for many big plays, registering seven catches for a team-high 114 receiving yards.
Over 100 of Sanders’ receiving yards came on receptions in the short and intermediate part of the field, where the standout tight end is most dangerous.
Sanders leads all FBS tight ends in yards per catch (22.6) this season after Week 2 of the college football season. That’s thanks in large part to four explosive plays he generated against Alabama in the receiving game (plays of 15+ yards).
