Wardell Mack, CB (Florida commit)

High-four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback and Florida commit Wardell Mack had one of the most interesting recruitments among the top DB prospects Texas is pursuing this cycle. Texas was in a good spot for Mack after he officially visited Austin in late June.

But Mack committed to Florida a couple of months after his Texas official visit (specifically on Aug. 14).

And despite committing to Florida less than one month ago, Mack’s recruitment appears to remain open this fall. Even though he didn’t make it to the visit he scheduled to Austin for the season opener against the Rice Owls at DKR on Sep. 2, Mack remains in contact with the Longhorns.

Horns247 reported on Sep. 4 (paid content) that there is “growing optimism in Austin” this fall that the Longhorns will be able to flip Mack’s commitment from Florida before signing day in mid-December. This report paints the picture that Mack missing his Sep. 2 unofficial visit to Texas for the Rice game isn’t necessarily bad for the Longhorns in this recruitment.

Mack is a priority defensive back recruit in this class that the Longhorns are willing to fight for through the finish line on signing day in a few months.

If Texas can keep up its solid play on the field this season while Florida struggles in the SEC, the Longhorns will remain a real threat to flip Mack’s commitment from the Gators heading into signing day.
