The longtime Wyoming Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl took to the podium on Sep. 11 to speak on his team’s upcoming matchup at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin this weekend against head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 4 ranked Texas football. Bohl had a lot of good things to say about Texas in his Monday press conference.

As Bohl prepares his 2-0 (0-0 Mountain West) squad to face Sark and the Longhorns in Austin this weekend, the 10th-year Wyoming head coach clearly has a lot of respect for the team he’s going up against.

In his press conference on Sep. 11, he said that he thinks this is the “best Texas football team he’s seen” during his 35 years getting to watch the Longhorns.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl praises this Texas football team as the “best he’s seen”

"“I’ve had a chance to look at the University of Texas for 35 years. And sometime coaching against them, a lot of years coaching against them. This is the best Texas football team I’ve seen. I think they’re as good as what’s been advertised. A lot of the national writers have really great things to say about them.”"

Bohl has seen a lot of college football played during his two decades as a Division I head coach and three decades plus of coaching experience in general. He’s also seen a lot of good Longhorns teams that he’s faced as a college assistant coach during his time with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 1990s and early 2000s.

For Bohl to say this is the best Longhorns team he’s watched in the last three and a half decades is obviously a lot of respect being paid to this Texas squad ahead of their matchup against Wyoming this weekend.

Texas looks like the real deal after beating a top-three-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide team on the road at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Sep. 9. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns handed Nick Saban and the Tide their worst loss at home in his coaching tenure there, by a score of 34-24 last weekend.

After beating Alabama, Texas ranks No. 4 in this week’s AP Poll, its highest mark since it ranked No. 2 during the 2009 season.

Bohl talks about facing Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense this weekend

Bohl also discussed facing Ewers and the Longhorns offense after the redshirt sophomore quarterback’s huge performance in the win over Alabama on the road last weekend.

"“Ewers is the real deal. He’s as good as advertised. [Texas has] great receivers, people that can stretch the field, tight ends. And they take a lot of shots, and they’re not foul balls. They hit a lot of home runs.”"

Bohl said that Wyoming’s strategy to deal with the Texas offense is to get Ewers “out of his comfort zone” and “make him go to some place he doesn’t want to go”.

Ewers effectively threw the deep ball in Texas’ 10-point win over Alabama. He connected on three of five deep passing attempts for 115 yards and two touchdowns last weekend. Texas’ offense now gears up to face one of the better and more physical defenses that held a solid Texas Tech Red Raiders offense to just 20 regulation points in an overtime win in Laramie to open the 2023 season.

Wyoming prepares to face a stout Texas defense

Lastly, Bohl mentioned the stout Texas defense as his infamous run-heavy offense gets set to take the field against the Longhorns on Sep. 16.

"“I think their defensive front is very destructive. They run well. They’re back seven; guys tackle well. They have great speed, matched up with Bama, and ran step for step with them.”"

He characterized the Texas defense as “explosive” and “disruptive” from what he’s seen from this group this season.

Wyoming and Texas enter this matchup at DKR on Sep. 16 with undefeated 2-0 records. Texas has wins over Alabama on Sep. 9 and the Rice Owls in the season opener on Sep. 2.

Bohl and the Cowboys have knocked off Texas Tech in overtime in their season opener on Sep. 2 and FCS Portland State at home on Sep. 9. Texas and Wyoming kick off their contest at DKR in Austin at 7 p.m. CT on Sep. 16. The Longhorns opened as a 28.5-point favorite over Wyoming this week.
