Texas Football: Joel Klatt says Longhorns are an ‘elite’ team
The opinions have started rolling in force for head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 4 ranked Texas football after their massive Week 2 win on the road over the No. 3 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. Texas got arguably the program’s biggest win in the last decade by pulling off the upset of Alabama by double digits last weekend.
The Longhorns look like the real deal, a sentiment that college football analyst/media personality and former college quarterback Joel Klatt said on the “Joel Klatt Show” this week. Klatt is buying into the hype for the Longhorns this season, as are others around the college football media landscape (transcribed by On3).
"“Texas, you just did something. You just did something that basically nobody does. In fact, the only team that has in the last 54 games in Tuscaloosa is the Joe Burrow–LSU Tigers who went on to win the national championship, and that’s beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa.”"
After Texas became the first team to beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa since arguably the greatest college football team in the last decade, the 2019 LSU Tigers, the potential for this Longhorns season has skyrocketed.

Klatt also does a nice job illustrating the difference between the narrative that “Texas is back” and that this season can be great for Sark and the Longhorns.
"“This whole slogan and question of ‘Is Texas back,’ has hampered and hindered this program for years. They’ve had this standard and they’ve been trying to skip steps of how to build a program for so many years rather than just doing it right. That being said, Texas is an elite team this year. That’s the question we should ask ourselves every year. Not is Texas back, [we should ask] is Texas elite this year? Yes, they’re elite this year.”"
While it was great to celebrate the win over Alabama last weekend, the Longhorns must re-focus for the final non-conference game of the season against the Wyoming Cowboys at home at DKR in Austin in Week 3.
After taking on Wyoming in Week 3, the Longhorns kick off Big 12 play on the road against the Baylor Bears in Waco on Sep. 23.
