Zina Umeozulu, EDGE

Result: Allen-33, Braswell-9

Four-star Texas edge commit Zina Umeozulu and the Allen Eagles have hit their stride in the last few weeks. Umeozulu and the Allen defense led them to their third straight win, and second straight in district play, over the Denton (TX) Braswell Bengals by a convincing 33-9 score on Sep. 22.

Umeozulu played well for the Eagles, amassing multiple run stops and quarterback pressures from what we saw for Allen on Sep. 22. The official stats for Zina haven’t been posted on the MaxPreps website this season.

But the film we’ve seen and the live-game snaps we watched live for Umeozulu this week showed that he’s stout playing with his hand in the dirt out of the four and five-technique. After taking some reps at linebacker early this fall to help a position of need for the Eagles along the defensive front, Umeozulu looks to be back to his natural spot at EDGE.

I liked the effort we saw from Umeozulu, especially in run defense. He looks bigger playing at the EDGE position this season and hasn’t lost a step with a motor that keeps going through the whistle.

Allen’s defense held its last two foes to open district play to just 16 points combined. The last two weeks have shown much better results on defense for the 3-2 (2-0 District) Eagles after allowing over 35 points per game in the first three games of the season.

Umeozulu and the Eagles face their third district foe next week when they travel to Frisco to face the 1-4 Rock Hill Blue Hawks on Sep. 29.
