Texas Football: OU analyst calls Quinn Ewers ‘average’
Before the Red River Rivalry game between No. 3 Texas football and the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at the Texas State Fairgrounds this weekend, many hot takes are thrown around in the media. Amid the more recent hot takes came from former Oklahoma linebacker and co-podcaster/analyst on “The Oklahoma Breakdown”, Teddy Lehman.
On their preview of Red River on “The Oklahoma Breakdown” on Oct. 4, Lehman and Gabe Ikard discussed how to get at redshirt sophomore Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. And Lehman certainly had some bold takes regarding Ewers and his talent.
Lehman said that he feels like Ewers is “average” from what he’s seen from him on film this season. He also said that Ewers doesn’t have “elite arm talent” or great “athleticism”.
OU analyst Teddy Lehman calls Texas football QB Quinn Ewers “average” on preview show this week
There were some other noteworthy statements from Lehman regarding Ewers this week, but I think I can sum it up when he said the Sooners have a “large quarterback advantage” with fifth-year starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel compared to Quinn.
Ikard disagreed with at least part of this take from his co-podcaster/analyst Lehman. He responded to Lehman’s comments on Ewers by saying that he thinks saying Oklahoma has a “large quarterback advantage” with Gabriel over Quinn is a “bit much”.
Ikard stated that Gabriel has played better than Ewers this season and that people just “haven’t seen Dillon play”.
Gabriel and the Sooners have faced a much easier schedule than the Longhorns this season. According to the ESPN FPI, Texas ranks 16th in strength of schedule compared to 82nd for the Sooners this season.
This weekend will be by far the biggest test of the season for Gabriel and the Sooners. Oklahoma hasn’t seen a defensive front as deep and talented as the Longhorns. The same can probably be said for Texas’ secondary compared to the other teams Oklahoma has faced so far.
Red River between Texas and Oklahoma kicks off at 11 a.m. CT on Oct. 7 on ABC.
