A couple of days before the Red River Rivalry game between No. 3 Texas football and the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners, two superstar quarterbacks for both programs helped out for their “shifts” at Raising Cane’s in Dallas on Oct. 5. Legendary Texas quarterback Vince Young and Oklahoma Heisman-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield gave their time to help out for a shift at Raising Cane’s ahead of Red River this week.

Young took orders from the Texas faithful, and Mayfield worked the register for the Oklahoma side. Young and Mayfield also worked the drive-thru at Raising Cane’s, interacting with fans of the Longhorns and Sooners.

The two former superstar college quarterbacks also spoke to the media during their “shift” at Raising Cane’s on Oct. 5. Mayfield commented on his experiences at Raising Cane’s, saying, “it brings people together”.

Young agreed with Mayfield, saying that “it brings me together” and that he brings his son there every day after school.

This was not the first time that Young had worked in the service/food industry. He said he worked at a movie theater when he was younger.

"“I worked in a movie theater when I was younger. Just to do it over again. I was kind of nervous in front of everybody, but I think we did a good job. Us quarterbacks do what we do now. We’re quick learners.”"

Young speaks on Red River, Texas, and the State Fair in Dallas

Young spoke on the tradition and culture of Red River at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at the Texas State Fairgrounds.

"“The tradition and the culture of it, the atmosphere. Walking into the stadium and seeing the one side in red and one side burnt orange, it’s just a lot of history. To be a part of that, I know my kids will enjoy that for the rest of their life since I know we’ll probably be going for the rest of our lives.”"

VY is optimistic about the direction of the Longhorns under third-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.

"“Phenomenal season. Coach got his players that he wants there. What these guys did in the offseason was unbelievable. They worked and worked and got that chemistry down. I like that Coach makes sure they’re doing that. They went to the lake, went to the pool, they did a lot of things chemistry-wise. And I feel like a big reason why we were good that year was because of our chemistry.”"

A staple of the Texas State Fair is the opportunity to get some great food. Young said his favorite food to get at the Texas State Fair is a turkey leg, with Mayfield saying a funnel cake.

Young predicted Texas to beat Oklahoma 35-28 in a “tight game”. Mayfield predicted the score to be 38-35 Oklahoma.

Texas and Oklahoma will square off at the Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas on Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. CT. The set of ESPN College GameDay will be present at Red River this weekend for the eighth time since 2001, with the broadcast starting at 8 a.m. CT on Oct. 7.
