Among the most highly anticipated debuts in the Burnt Orange this preseason was true freshman combo guard Chris Johnson. The former highly touted high-four-star combo guard recruit out of Montverde Academy and the ex-Kansas Jayhawks commit was excellent at distributing the basketball for the White Team in this scrimmage.

Despite the White Team’s loss to Orange in this scrimmage, Johnson managed a scrimmage-high six assists with just two turnovers. He made smart decisions moving the ball around and creatively facilitated the offense. A three-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio in the first preseason scrimmage in front of the fans for a true freshman is a solid start for Johnson.

Inside Texas gave Johnson and true freshman forward Devon Pryor a nod for their play on offense for the White Team with some nice cuts and shots from the field.

Johnson was up-and-down shooting the ball from the field in this scrimmage. He went just 2-of-7 shooting from the field but knocked down his only three-point attempt. The shooting aspect of Johnson’s game will come along during the season, so him going 2-of-7 from the field in a scrimmage obviously isn’t anything to be worried about.

Witnessing Johnson’s development during his first season at Texas will be exciting. He will be a key cog in the backcourt rotation as Texas’ first facilitator coming off the bench behind starting guards Tyrese Hunter and Abmas.
