Texas football is hitting the stretch run on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class this fall. The first signing day is roughly two months away (Dec. 20, 2023). And there are still a few spots Texas’ staff is working to fill at key positions in the 2024 class heading into the first signing day in mid-December.

Texas is looking at around a half-dozen flip candidates this fall to help fill out the rest of the spots in the 2024 class in the next couple of months. This fall, most of the flip targets for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff were offers Texas was pursuing before these recruits committed elsewhere.

At this point of the cycle, a few of the important positions of need for the Longhorns in the 2024 class are wide receiver, defensive line, and offensive line. Texas would also take a linebacker among a handful of candidates the staff is courting.

Here are three elite recruits the Longhorns are working to flip from other schools on the trail in the last two months before signing day in mid-December.

Wardell Mack, CB (Florida commit)

Since late spring, the highly touted four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback and Florida Gators commit Wardell Mack was a top out-of-state defensive back priority for the Longhorns in the 2024 class. And despite his mid-August commitment to head coach Billy Napier and the Gators, Texas has continued to recruit Mack in the last few months.

Inside Texas reported on Oct. 19 (paid content) that Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph was at Mack’s game last week against West Jefferson. Texas is still pushing to get Mack to campus for a gameday visit at DKR this fall.

The last time Mack made the trip to Austin was in late June for his official visit.

Joseph and the Longhorns have remained in communication with Mack almost daily this fall.

The Florida State Seminoles reportedly expect Mack to visit Tallahassee for their game against the Miami Hurricanes on Nov. 11. The LSU Tigers are still staying in contact with Mack this fall.

If Florida struggles on the field to close out the 2023 season, it is certainly possible that Texas effectively chips away at Mack’s commitment to the Gators before signing day in a couple of months. That’s what we’ll be watching in this recruitment in the coming weeks before signing day.
